Young Voices for Choices

 Hello everyone,

We have had another busy few months since the last newsletter.  We now have our own set of rules called a constitution.  We will be choosing a chairperson and other officers from the young people and will be able to apply for funding in our own name.  We have had help with this from Michelle at Disability Wales and, although we are still working on it, it will hopefully be sorted soon.

Different members of forum have been involved in several consultations throughout the spring. With Learning Disability Wales, Children in Wales and the Welsh Assembly Government.

Some of us also attended a Hate Crime Conference held in Narberth which we found very interesting. Following on from this the Hate Crime officer for Dyfed Powys came to one of our meetings and brought along other police officers and a patrol car. One or two of our “chopsy” members found themselves under arrest complete with handcuffs! The officers have invited us to police Headquarters in Carmarthen in July to see all the different things that go on there. We are looking forward to that. We all feel that we have a better understanding of hate crime now.

On the Sporting front some of the Young Voice Vipers, our Boccia team, competed in the area Boccia competition held at the Meads earlier in the year and one or two have also been to Cardiff to compete in the national competitions.

Once again we have been to the Wheelchair Sports Spectacular held at the university in Cardiff and it was good fun. We stopped on the way home for a meal and a visit to the cinema. The girls went to see Sex and the City (nice clothes!) and the boys went to see Prince of Persia which they said was action packed! Why do they always put wheelchairs at the very front?!!

Hope you all have a good summer. See you in the autumn
